Our Growth through the Years

Zan Mitrev Clinical Hospital laid the foundations of modern cardiovascular medicine in Macedonia in 1999, when the former special hospital “Filip Vtori” began operating under the leadership and vision of the then young doctor, Zan Mitrev.

From the very beginning, Academician Dr. Zan Mitrev’s vision was clear — to create a medical institution that operates according to the highest international standards, with a strong focus on quality, safety and results.

The First Bypass Surgery in Macedonia

On March 1, 2000, the hospital officially began operations, and the first bypass surgery in the country was successfully performed under the leadership of Academician Dr. Zan Mitrev — a historic moment for Macedonian healthcare.

Innovations in Cardiac Surgery

– First open-heart surgery performed on an awake patient
– Introduction of treatment for congenital heart defects
– Placement of the first ASD occluder in a four-year-old child
That same year, the hospital established a modern dedicated department due to the growing number of patients.

New Diagnostic Center – 24/7 Care

With the opening of the new diagnostic center, the hospital became one of the leading medical centers in the region, offering continuous access to advanced diagnostics and specialized care.

10,000 Successful Surgeries

The hospital marked its anniversary with more than 10,000 successfully performed surgeries — a strong confirmation of patient trust and the expertise of the medical team.

New Facility – A New Standard

With the opening of the new facility after 16 years of existence, Zan Mitrev Clinical Hospital expanded its capacity fivefold, creating a modern hospital built according to the highest international standards, with maximum comfort for both patients and staff.

JCI – Gold Standard for Quality

In October 2017, the hospital received JCI accreditation, becoming the first hospital in the region to receive this gold seal for quality and patient safety.
Followed by:
– JCI reaccreditation (2020)
– National accreditation for quality (2018)

These recognitions confirm the hospital’s continuous commitment to patient safety and medical excellence.

Leader and Visionary

Alongside his clinical work, Academician Dr. Zan Mitrev actively participates in scientific and educational activities. Since 2002, he has held the title of Academician and regularly presents his work and achievements at international congresses.

The hospital and its founder have received numerous international awards and recognitions, including the prestigious award from the Europe Business Assembly in Oxford for Best Healthcare Manager and Hospital.
